Addie M. Read

Addie M. Read, daughter of Alfred and Sabina Read, was born in Mitchell county, Kansas, May 27, 1878, and departed this life at Osceola, Iowa, April 3, 1931, aged 52 years, 10 months and eight days.

Mr. and Mrs. Read moved to this state in 1881 to part of the Read estate, near Winterset, now known as the Jickling farm, living there until 1898, then returning to Kansas where Addie remained until 1911, when she came to Barney and made her home with her uncle, Sam Gardner, until her death.

Addie united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1900 in Neosho Falls, Kansas, later transferring her membership to the Church of Christ at Barney, where she remained a faithful member until the end.

She was secretary and treasurer of the Sunday school for years and was especially interested in the work of the Ladies’ Aid.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Fisher, Barney; Mrs. Jennie Simpson, Winterset; Mrs. Susie Longshore, Johnstown, Colorado; a brother, Harry Read of Barney; an aunt, five uncles and numerous other relatives and friends.

The funeral was conducted from the Barney Church of Christ, Rev. F. Clare McCallon, pastor of Osceola Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was in Barney cemetery.
