DEATH OF R. S. COOPER

Prominent Winterset Dentist Dies At His Home Following Long Illness

Dr. Robert Satterfield Cooper, a life long resident of Winterset, died at his home on West Jefferson street, Thursday evening, January 19th. He was fifty-two years of age and had practised dentistry here since 1905, with the exception of the last few months, when his illness made it necessary for him to remain at home.

Dr. Cooper was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Cooper, prominent Winterset couple. He attended the local schools and was graduated from the Winterset high school in 1898. During his high school days, he was employed in the dental office of Dr. Rolla Schwaner, and he entered the dental department of Drake University in the fall of 1898, and graduated in 1901. For four years he practiced his profession in Des Moines and taught in the Drake dental college. In 1905 he opened his dental office in Winterset, and continuously practiced until his disability overcame him in June 1932.

On September 28, 1909 he was married to Eva M. Gilpin and she and their daughter, Roberta survive him. He also leaves two brothers, Judge W. S. Cooper of Winterset and Ralph Cooper of Boone and two sisters, Miss Esther Cooper of Ames and Mrs. Elizabeth Guthrie of Kansas.

At an early age he became a member of the First Presbyterian church, and he served for several years as superintendent of the Sunday school and as a chorister.

He was active in all public affairs and gave generously of his time and energy for the betterment of the community. He served on the Winterset City Council and was instrumental in having sewerage system installed in the city.

He had served and was serving at the time of his death, in connection with the Council of the Boy Souts. He had helped with the Hi-Y work, has served as secretary of the Commercial club and was one of the charter members of the Winterset Rotary club, in which as so long as his health permitted, he was an active and faithful member. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge and had been Chancellor and a regular attendant, until his illness kept him from attending. He became ill with heart trouble last June. After remaining at home, several months, he tried to spend several hours in his office each day, but he was forced to give that up and his condition gradually grew worse.

The Rev. R. C. Cully, pastor his church conducted his funeral services at the First Presbyterian church, Saturday afternoon, January 21st at 2:30 o'clock. He was assisted by the Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the Methodist church and the Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. The pallbearers were Dr. J. W. Bunker, Ed M. Smith, Lawrence Blomgren, Lloyd Montross, Ralph Thompson and W. F. Craig.
