John Elliott Clearwater, the son of Henry and Jane Clearwater, began life Sept. 30, 1851 at Farmer City, Ill. and passed from the earthly to heavenly realms on Sept. 18, 1925 at midnight.
The first part of his life was spent on a farm and from this early connection with nature, he learned many a lesson that he used very effectively later in his work. Also in a part of this time he played very well the part of the schoolmaster and taught the minds of persons now in active and useful work.
He was united in marriage on April 8, 1891 to Miss Ida Basset. One child, Edgar Basset Clearwater was given to this union. The home and family life has had a large measure of joy as the days have lengthened into years.
The call of the Lord to the ministry of the Gospel came to him in the years preceeding 1889 but in that year he responded and united with the Northwest Iowa conference in session that year at Algona, Iowa. The ordination by Episcopal hands came to see him first at Spencer, Ia., in 1890 when Bishop Fowler ordained him a deacon and again at Ida Grove in 1897 when the final or elders orders were conferred upon him by Bishop Walden. His pastorates, except for the time spent in ministerial study and preparation at Garrett Biblical Institute at Evanston, Ill, were all in the northern part of Iowa. After his retirement from the active work of the Northwest Iowa conference, he was pastor at West Star for three years. Due to failing health the family home was changed to Winterset in 1918.
He was also a member of the Masonic order, at the time of his death being a member of Evening Star lodge of Winterset. He was universally beloved by the brothers of his fraternity.
There is bereaved by his departure, his widow, Mrs. Ida B. Clearwater, his son, Edgar B. Clearwater, two sister, Mrs. Jennie Terhune of Sioux City and Mrs. L. O. Carey of Winterset.
A called servant of the Most High has gone to receive his crown. Faithful in work and character to the last he will have a full reward in that world to come. Many whose thoughts and footsteps have been turned into the way of life will rejoice in having known him. His cheerful smile and a ready greeting proclaimed him ever a true lover of men. Such men are the workers that are patiently building up the world. His heart was that of a true man, a good father and a faithful preacher.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Winterset, Sept. 20, conducted by the pastor, Rev. D. J. Shenton. The Masonic interment ritual was conducted at the grave by the Masons of Evening Star lodge, the work being presented by Leo C. Percival, followed by the committal service of the Methodist church.
