Thursday, February 28, 1929JOHN A. GUIHER Dies at Miami, Florida
John A. Guiher, a well known citizen of Winterset and Madison county, and a former member of the state board of railroad commissioners, died at a hospital in Miami, Florida, Tuesday, February 26th, 1929, shortly after 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Mr. Guiher had been suffereing with heart trouble for the past year, and after Christmas, he and Mrs. Guiher went to Miami, where it was hoped that the warmer climate would prove beneficial. He developed pneumonia two weeks ago and his condition gradually grew worse. Dr. Harry Guiher, of Smithfield, Pennsylvania, went to Florida, and he and Mrs. Guiher left Miami Tuesday night and are scheduled to arrive in Des Moines with the body Friday morning. No definite announcement of funeral arrangements can be made at this time.
Mr. Guiher was born in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, in 1858, and was a sons of Dr. and Mrs. James Guiher. He attended the Waynesburg college after completing his preparatory work, and studied law in the University of Pennsylvania, and in the law office of Richard Vaux, in Philadelphia. In 1881, he was admitted to the bar in Waynesburg, and practiced his profession there until September, 1883, when he came to Winterset. He entered into partnership with A. R. Dabney, and later, he and his brother, W. T. Guiher, formed a partnership, which has been in operation for over 30 years.
Mr. Guiher was the first county attorney of Madison county and served from 1887 to 1891. In 1915, he was appointed a member of the state board of railway commissioners, and was elected in November, 1916, for a four year term. The deceased was one of the organizers of the Madison County State bank, and has been a director of the bank ever since its organization. He also took an active interest in the affairs of Winterset, and served as school director for a number of years. He has been a loyal member of the Presbyterian church and has served as elder for many years. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge.
Mr. Guiher's ability as a lawyer was known over the state, and he has served on many important cases. In 1907, he was one of the arbitrators in the controversy between the Street Railway company and its employees, and more recently has been sitting as a master in chancery in the dispute involved between the Des Moines Union Railway and the Hubbell interests. As a man and as a lawyer, his conducct measured up to the highest standard and much respect is accorded him.
In June, 1891, Mr. Guiher was married to Miss Mary L. Evans, and she died in January 1922. In December, 1924, he was married to Mrs. Bertha Foster, who survives him. He also leaves three brothers and a sister, W. T. Guiher, of Winterset; Dr. Harry Guiher, of Smithfield, Pennsylvania; Frank Guiher and Miss Nancy Guiher, of Waynesburg.
