Wednesday, October 27, 1965PHIL CAREY DIES IN PLANE CRASH
Philip E. Carey of Des Moines, former resident of Madison county, was killed last Wednesday night when the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed in north central Missouri. He was returning to Des Moines from a business trip to Hot Springs, Ark., when the fatal crash occurred.
Before the crash, Carey had radioed the control tower at Kirksville, Mo., that he was lost, running low on fuel and having trouble controlling the aircraft. There was light rain and fog over the area. He was a pilot with many years of experience.
Carey was 43 years of age at his death. He was a son of Mrs. Marie Carey and the late Ed Carey of St. Charles, and was a graduate of Winterset High school. He was veteran of World War II and had been operating an auto and truck upholstering business in Des Moines.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Phyllis Algoe Carey, and his two sons, Paul, aged 10 and Pat, aged 8, all of Des Moines; his mother of St. Charles; two brothers, Luther R. Carey of Des Moines and Paul H. Carey of Ogden, Utah; and two sisters, Mrs. Gerald Speicher of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Mrs. Dale Johnson of Minot, N.Dak.
Funeral services were held Saturday from Hamilton's Funeral home in Des Moines, with burial that afternoon, with military honors,in the Winterset Cemetery.
