February 12, 1969St. Sgt. James D. Camp, 21, of Winterset was reported killed in action in Vietnam on Tuesday, Feb. 4, according to word received here by his family.
Sergeant Camp died of wounds received while defending his camp against a night attack by the enemy. He had been in Vietnam since last Oct. 28.
Sergeant Camp is the fifth Madison county fatality of the Vietnamese war.
He was a son of Marvin J. and the late Edith Camp of Winterset. His mother died a number of years ago. He graduated from Winterset High School with the class of 1965, and attended the state University of Iowa in Iowa City before entering the U.S. Army in November 1967.
In addition to his father, he is survived by four sisters, Reva Camp, Mrs. Sharon Sheumaker of Des Moines, Mrs. Nellie Mitchell of Loveland, Colo., and Mrs. Nadine York of North Liberty; and three brothers, Marvin (Jerry) Camp of Cedar Rapids, David Camp of Iowa City and Jack Camp of Winterset.
He was engaged to marry Patricia Stephenson of Peru.
The body of the young soldier is expected to arrive here this Wednesday night. Funeral services will be held this Friday at 1 p.m. from the First United Methodist church of Winterset. Burial will be made in Union cemetery in Clarke county.
