Clark Caldwell, Iowa City

Clark R. Caldwell, 91, of Iowa City died June 21, 1998, at Mercy Hospital following a long illness.

Services and burial of the cremains will be at a later date.

Clark Caldwell was born July 9, 1906, in Petersburg, Ill., to Frank and Elizabeth (Armstrong) Caldwell. He was a Winterset High School graduate and received a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Iowa in 1929. He married Margaret Knowles on June 23, 1929, in Madrid. Clark owned and operated the Caldwell Insurance Agency until his retirement. He served as president of the Iowa city School Board in the 1940s. He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, senior warden of the Vestry and was past district governor for the Iowa City Lions Club. He also was Past president of the Iowa State Lions Club and the Iowa State Association of Independent Insurance Agents and disaster chairman and past president of the American Red Cross.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one daughter.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Stephen of Iowa City; two daughters, Patricia Dow (husband James) of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Mary Veldey (husband Gary) of La Crosse, Wis.; one brother, Woodrow Caldwell (wife Jerri) of Fallbrook, Calif.; nine grandchildren and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mercy Foundation, Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City or the donor's choice.

Arrangements were handled by Callahan Funeral Home in Iowa City.
