ACCIDENT IS FATAL TO AGED RESIDENT

John Graham Burns Dies Friday From Injuries Received Wednesday Morning

John Graham Burns, aged resident of Union township was fatally injured last Wednesday evening, October 12th, when he slipped and fell from a hay rack near his home. His team of horses became frightened and ran, throwing him to the ground. He was paralyzed, and his condition was regarded as critical. He died Friday morning, October 14th, at 7:45 o'clock at the age of 83 years.

Mr. Burns was born in Lansdowne, Canada, but came to this county in 1892, and has since resided in Winterset, and on a farm nearby.

The marriage of Mr. Burns and Sarah M. Greer took place October 8, 1872, and had she lived until this month, they would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Mr. Burns however, preceded her husband in death, by 3-1/2 months.

The Burns were the parents of five children; Mrs. Clara Mills of Des Moines, Mrs. Anna Godron, Ted Burns and Miller Burns of Winterset. Nelson Burns died at the age of eleven years. He also leaves a sister and brother, both of whom reside in Canada.

The Rev. Fred Madson conducted his funeral service at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home Sunday afternoon, October 16th, at 2:30 o'clock, and burial took place in the Winterset cemetery.

Mr. Burns engaged in farming, during his younger days and for many years had a feed store. More details of his life may be found in the mortuary column.

JOHN BURNS DIES – INJURED IN FALL

Aged Farmer Of Union Township. Had Lived Here Since 1882

John G. Burns, 83, resident of the county fifty years, and one of its well known farmers, died at his home early Friday morning from injuries sustained October 12 when he fell from a hay rack while working with his son, Miller Burns. Injuries to his head and spine resulted in paralysis which was given as the cause of death..

The Rev. Fred W. Madson, pastor of the Baptist church conducted the services Sunday afternoon at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home; burial was in the Winterset cemetery with the I. O. O. F. lodge of which the deceased was a past grand, in charge of the services there.

Mr. Burns was born at Lansdowne, Canada, March 30, 1849, the son of Susan and James Burns. He came to Madison county in April 1882 and was married to Sarah M. Greer October 8, 1872. Mrs. Burns died three and a half months ago.

Mr. Burns was in business in Winterset a number of years, moving twenty-five years ago to his farm four miles northeast of Winterset. When a boy he became a communicant of the Episcopal church, transferring his membership to the Baptist church in 1887. He had been a prominent member of the I. O. O. F. lodge.

The children who survive are Mrs. Clara Mills and Ted Burns of Des Moines; Mrs. W. C. Gordon and Miller Burns of Winterset: a son Nelson died at the age of eleven. A sister, Mrs. Alice Riley of Toledo, Canada, a brother, William Burns of Landsdowne, Canada, and several grandchildren also survive.
