Wednesday, February 23, 1921MRS. SARAH WRIGHT
Mrs. W. W. Wright was born in Des Moines county, near the town of Middleton, March 14, 1843, and died at Winterset, Iowa, Feb. 19, 1921, being nearly 78 years old.
She was a descendant of that vigorous Scotch-Irish colony who settled in America early in the last century. Her grandfather, located near the boundary line which separate Hamilton and Butler counties, Ohio, where he lived to a great age. His son, James Lowrie McMaken, in 1838 removed to Des Moines County, Iowa, and there came with him, two sons, J. J. and J. L. McMaken. They both were prominent citizens of the county, the former having served his people in an official capacity, among others that of representative in the 10th General Assembly.
The family of J. L. McMaken consisted of eight children, of whom Mrs. Wright was the oldest, all of whom have passed away except three who were present at the funeral. They are: J. W. McMaken of Des Moines county, J. M. McMaken and Mrs. Irene Johnston of Henry county. There was also present, a niece, Mrs. Thelma Henry, wife of Dr. Henry of Hedrick, Iowa; and Mrs. Clara Myers of Lohrville, Iowa, also a niece. Six other nieces and nephews are living in various places in Iowa.
Mrs. Wright inherited many traits peculiar to her Scotch-Irish parentage, the most characteristic being indomnitable will and warm, sympathetic heart. What she thought was right, she clung to with hoops of steel. In the Wright neighborhood, at times of trouble and sorrow, it was always suggested that we "send for Aunt Sally," and such calls were invariably heeded.
The Wrights came to Madison County in 1870 and lived for a time southeast of Peru. In 1881 they moved to Scott township and for 12 years, lived near Bethel church. Mrs. Wright first united with the United Presbyterian church and when they came to Madison county, she with her husband, joined the Methodist church, of which both were faithful members till death. At Bethel, especially, were they very active in church work. She had a Sunday schol class composed of young men in whom she was vitally interested, and whom she frquently mentioned in later years.
About two years ago, Mr. Wright passed away at the comfortable home where they lived since coming to Winterset in 1893. Since the death of her husband, she suffered from an incurable malady, which was aggravated by the loss of her husband. She leaves a grateful heritage in the memory of the many whom she aided and comforted in time of trouble.
The funeral occurred from the Methodist church Monday afternoon, attended by the Womenn's Relief Corps, in a body, of which she was an honored member from the time of its organization; and a large assemblage of friends and neighbors from the Bethel neighborhood. The services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Jackson Giddens.
