Albert Burns Died Sunday at Farm Home Near Winterset

Albert Burns, 67 year old farmer living in Union township five miles northeast of Winterset, was burned to death early Sunday morning when flames enveloped the bed on which he was sleeping.

Mr. Burns and his younger brother, Miller Burns, lived alone together at their farm home. The elder brother was sleeping on a cot in the living room. Miller said that he was awakened about 4 a.m. Sunday by smoke. Getting up to investigate, he went into the living room only to see Albert sitting upright in bed, with flames all around him.

Miller carried his brother into an adjoining room and placed him on the floor, but the elder brother was dead by that time. Most of the clothing was burned from his body.

Coroner Paul Eggleston was called to the scene of the tragedy but reported that there will be no inquest. Albert apparently had awakened in the night, and had been smoking, with sparks igniting the bedding after he dropped off to sleep again. No damage was done to the house.

Mr. Burns was a long-time resident of Madison county, and was well known here.

Funeral services were held here Tuesday at 3 p.m. from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Donald Worden, pastor of the Winterset Baptist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
