CARL BURKHEAD DIES SUDDENLY

Fatally Stricken in New Mexico, Enroute to Arizona

Carl M. Burkhead, a prominent Madison county farmer for many years, died last Friday, July 22, at Las Vegas, N. Mex. Because of his health, he was enroute to visit a sister in Tempe, Ariz., but was stricken fatally before he could reach there.

Mr. Burkhead was 69 years of age. He was born in Polk county, Dec. 9, 1890, a son of Charles and Vanetta Childress Burkhead. His early life was spent in that county. He operated a general store in Cummings until 1922, then moved to a farm in Dallas county. In 1940 he moved to the farm south of Winterset which had been his home during the last 20 years.

He was married Feb. 22, 1916, to Winifred Douglas in West Des Moines. they were parents of two daughters, both of whom survive their father.

During his 20 years in Madison county, Mr. Burkhead was active in Farm Bureau and other farm organizations. He was a member of the Deer Creek Chapel church.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Winifred Burkhead; the two daughters, Ruth Burkhead, at home, and Mrs. Jane Wacht of Tempe, Ariz., five grandchildren; a brother, Luther Burkhead of Lorimor; and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Willcockson and Mrs. Joe Milledge, both of Des Moines.

Funeral services were held this Tuesday from the Grace Baptist church in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. David Kiser and the Rev. Richard Mohr. Burial was made in Jordan cemetery at West Des Moines.
