Joseph Brittain, DeSoto

Joseph Clarence Brittain, Jr., 88, of DeSoto died Aug. 18, 2005 at his home.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 22 at McCalley Funeral home in Adel with burial at North McDonald Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Madison County.

Joe Brittain was born Dec. 15, 1916 in Jefferson Township, Madison County, to Joseph Clarence and Mary J. (Brayman) Brittain Sr. He attended Stone and Jefferson Center schools, graduating from Van Meter High School in 1935. On Sept. 27, 1942, he married Lois Jean Clark in Las Vegas, Nev. Due to health problems, Joe retired in 1974 from the Marquette Cement Plant in Earlham following 25 years of service. He was a charter member of the DeSoto Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, James Whitney Brittain; and a brother, Walter Brittain.

He is survived by two sons, Clark Brittain of DeSoto and Jason Brittain of Cheyenne, Wyo.; one brother, Gene Brittain of Waukee; four sisters, Ruth Aldrich and Evelynn Hubbard, both of Winterset; and Mary Jane Brittain and Carol Brittain, both of Des Moines; and six grandchildren and 10 great-granchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa.
