Wednesday, April 30, 1969VETERAN OF WAR WITH SPAIN DIES
Robert A. Bonham of Winterset, last surviving veteran of the Spanish-American war in Madison County, died Wednesday, April 23 at a Winterset nursing home. He was 92 years of age.
Mr. Bonham was a native of Ohio, where he was born at Washington Court House on Jan. 9, 1877, a son of Amos and Sarah Todhunter Bonham. When the Spanish-American war broke out, he enlisted, April 25, 1898, in Company E, 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment. He served until the close of the war, seeing action in Puerto Rico.
He was married in Ohio Dec. 25, 1901, to Nellie B. Williams. They moved to Rhodes, Iowa in 1902, where, with his father, he built and operated a brick and tile factory. Later, he engaged in the same business at Cambridge, Iowa, living there until 1923 when he moved to Earlham with the Midwest Lumber company. Later, he was employed by the Marquette Cement company at the Earlham quarry, serving as superintendent until his retirement in 1948.
He was a life member of both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. His church membership was with the First Christian church of Winterset.
Mr. Bonham's wife died March 24, 1962. He is survived by two sons, Aubrey R. Bonham of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Robert W. Bonham of Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Vergie E. Love of Winterset; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Grace Thompson of Olin, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. Robert Owens of Burlington, former pastor of the First Christian church here. Burial was made with military honors in the Winterset cemetery.
