Page 1IN FAILING HEALTH FOR SEVERAL YEARS
Mrs. Elizabeth Shambaugh of Van Meter Died Last Wednesday
Van Meter (Special) Mrs. Elizabeth Shambaugh, widow of the late John Shambaugh, passed away at her home in Van Meter on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 22 at the age of 94 years.
Mrs. Shambaugh had been in failing health for several years, and while her death was not unexpected, it brought sorrow to members of the family and friends throughout the community in which she had lived for so many years.
Mrs. Shambaugh was one of the real pioneers of this vicinity, coming here with her parents, Jacob and Mahaleth Gutshall in 1855, when she was eight years old. She was born in New Rumley, Ohio on Jan. 11, 1847. Her father made a trip to Iowa in 1852 and another in 1854 to find a location for a new home. In 1855 he brought his wife, his two daughters, Elizabeth and Ruth, and son Harry, who was just a baby, overland in prairie schooner and carriage to their new home - a farm between Van Meter and Booneville. They were six weeks on the trip. It was here Elizabeth grew to young womanhood and in 1869 she married Volney Evans. A daughter, Vivian was born to their union. Mr. Evans died in 1872.
In 1879 she married John Shambaugh, a cattle feeder. Three children were born to their union, a son and daughter who died in infancy and a son Jacob. They established their home a mile south of her parents home, which transferred her from Dallas to Madison county. She continued her residence there until 1938 when their lovely home was destroyed by fire. Since then Mrs. Shambaugh and her daughter, Miss Vivian Evans have lived in Van Meter. Mr. Shambaugh died in 1919.
Mrs. Shambaugh was a life long member and loyal supporter of the Union Chapel United Brethren church. She was greatly interested in the missionary society and was faithful in her attendance to all the church activities as long as she was able.
She is survived by a daughter, Miss Vivian Evans of Van Meter, a son Jacob J. Shambaugh of Des Moines, and two brothers, Harry Gutshall and George A. Gutshall both of this vicinity, and two granddaughters, Mrs. T. R. Gregory of Pasadena, Cal., and Nancy Shambaugh of Des Moines.
The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at the Van Meter United Brethren church, conducted by the Rev. E. A. Elliott of Des Moines, a former pastor, assisted by the Rev. David Thompson of Van Meter.
Miss Marie Henry sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "Rock of Ages", with Mrs. Kenneth Lovell as pianist.
The pallbearers were Ralph Jennings, Boyd W. Landers, Marion Brooker, Henry Wishmier, Ralph Diddy and Virgil Bench.
Burial was made in the Union Chapel Cemetery.
