Kenneth Benedict, New Virginia

Kenneth Lloyd Benedict, 84, of New Virginia died of cancer June 27, 2000 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 30, at the New Virginia United Methodist Church with Pastor Skip Rushing officiating. Burial will be at New Virginia Cemetery. Open visitation will be after 9 a.m. Thursday, June 29, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, with the family present from 7-8 p.m.

Kenneth Benedict was born Sept. 18, 1915 to Mel Vernon and Rosa (Little) Benedict of rural Peru and was educated in Madison county country schools. He married Gertrude Baker on Nov. 3, 1944, in Troy, Kan. A retired farmer, Kenneth was a member of Farm Bureau, Do-Sceola Square Dance Club, and the New Virginia United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Beverly Jones (husband George) of Sumner; three sons, Lloyd Benedict (wife Christine) of St. Charles, Wesley Benedict (wife Sheryl) of Truro and Roger Benedict (wife Kathy) of Indianola; a twin brother, Loren Keith Benedict (wife Reva) of Creston; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa or the United Methodist Church in New Virginia.

KENNETH LLOYD BENEDICT

Kenneth Lloyd Benedict, son of Mel Vernon and Rosa Little Benedict, was born Sept. 18, 1915, in Madison County near Peru and died June 27, 2000, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. He was 84

He attended Madison County country schools and married Gertrude Baker on Nov. 3, 1944, in Troy, Kan.

They were longtime farmers in the New Virginia community and he retired in 1997.

Mr. Benedict was a member of the Farm Bureau, Do-Sceola Square Dance Club and the United Methodist Church in New Virginia.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Vanora Mullins and Wilma Overton; and two brothers, an infant, Orvin Benedict and Vernon Benedict.

Mr. Benedict is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gertrude Benedict of New Virginia; a daughter, Beverly Jones and her husband, George Jones of Sumner; three sons, Lloyd Benedict and his wife, Christine Benedict, of St. Charles, Wesley Benedict and his wife, Sheryl Benedict, of Truro and Roger Benedict and his wife, Kathy Benedict, of Indianola; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a twin brother, Loren Keith Benedict and his wife, Reva Benedict, of Creston; other relatives and friends.

Open visitation will be today (Thursday) after 9 a.m. at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola. The family will be present from 7-8 p.m. in the evening.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the New Virginia United Methodist Church, Pastor Skip Rushing officiating. Clyta Howell, organist, will accompany Reba Reed as she sings Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art.

Casket bearers will be Bob Benedict, Jared Miller, Lewis Benedict, Jim Benedict, Rich Pentico, Andrew Benedict, Mark Congdon and Mike Burkhead. Interment will be in New Virginia Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or the United Methodist Church in New Virginia.
