CARL C. YORK, Winterset

Services for Carl C. York, 98, Winterset, who died December 25, 1989, at the Bethesda Care Center in Winterset, were held Thurs., Dec. 28, at the Earlham Friends Church with the Rev. Eldon Cole officiating. Burial was at the Penn Center Cemetery.

Born July 24, 1891 in Osborne County, Kan., he was the son of Hudson and Cora Hennen York. After living in Jewell County, Kan., the family came to Iowa to live on a homestead west of Dexter where he attended high school. He married Bertha A. Ratcliff of Jewell County, Kan., on March 15, 1917. They farmed in Polk County for 25 years.

He was also an assessor in Clover Hills and Walnut townships for 25 years. They moved to the Earlham community where they farmed for 10 years.

Over a period of 30 years he worked with Patrons Mutual Insurance at Stuart, as director, secretary and board member.

Following his retirement in 1966, the couple moved to Winterset. His hobby was building furniture for his children and grandchildren and he was active in church.

He is survived by one son, Arden of West Des Moines; daughters, Helen Piper of West Des Moines, Marjorie Slavens of Cumming, and Carolyn Moore of Earlham; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Carl Custer York was born July 24, 1891 in Osborne County, Kansas, to Hudson Grant and Cora Hennen York. His mother died when he was 15 months old and he was raised by his mother’s sister, Elva and her husband George Couch.

After living in Jewell County, Kansas they came to Iowa to live on a Couch homestead west of Dexter, Iowa, where he attended high school. Later they moved to Clover Hills, Valley Junction, Iowa.

He married Bertha A. Ratcliff of Jewell County, Kansas on March 15, 1917. They farmed in Polk County, Iowa for 25 years. He was also an assessor in Clover Hills and Walnut Township for 25 years. They moved to the Earlham community where they farmed for 10 years.

Over a period of 30 years he worked with Patrons Mutual Insurance at Stuart, as director, secretary or board member.

Following his retirement in 1966 they moved to Winterset. His hobby was building furniture for his children and grandchildren.

He was an active supporter of various churches in the communities in which he lived.

Carl is survived by one son, Arden, and three daughters, Helen Piper, Marjorie Slavens and Carolyn Moore, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted December 28, 1989 at the Earlham Friends Church, Earlham, Iowa with Reverend Eldon Cole officiating. Organ music was provided by Irene Cole. Pallbearers were Philip Moore, Timothy Slavens, Glenn York, Roger Brown, Shawn Moore, James McAllister, Rusty Guion, Tim Guion, Tom Walker and Mark Moore. Interment was in Penn Center Cemetery, rural Earlham, Iowa.
