HERBERT EHM, Winterset

Herbert John Ehm, 92, died April 4, 2006, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 8, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset with Pastor Steve Koch officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with military rites performed by VFW Post 8142 of Winterset.

Herb Ehm was born Oct. 23, 1913, in Adair County to John and Lucy (Hohartz) Ehm and was a 1931 graduate of Fontanelle High School. He continued his education at Wartburg College in Waverly and Iowa State University. On June 6, 1937, he married Wilma V. Wiig in Greenfield. Herb had been the owner and operator of the Ben Franklin retail store in Winterset from 1939 to 1978. Following his retirement in 1978, he served as building inspector and zoning administrator for the city of Winterset and was involved with SCORE, a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration. A resident of Winterset since 1939, his memberships included Lakeview Country Club, Winterset Lions Club (50 plus years) and American Legion Post 184 and VFW Post 8142 (both life memberships). He was a charter member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset where he taught Sunday school and was active with the choir and council. Herb had been a director at Farmers & Merchants State Bank since 1954, acquiring emeritus status in 1992. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a brother and two sisters.

He is survived by one daughter, Meb Ehm of La Junta, Colo.
