MRS. DEWITT BASS DIES SUDDENLY

Heart Attack Fatal at Her Home Near Winterset Monday

Mrs. DeWitt Bass, a lifelong resident of Madison county and member of a well-known family here, died suddenly at her home west of Winterset Monday evening. Death was caused by a heart attack. She was 78 years of age, having observed her birthday the preceding day.

Mrs. Bass was born in this county March 19, 1872. She was the former Mary Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Mathias J. and Mary Rogan Smith.

She was married to DeWitt Bass Sept. 19, 1893. They were the parents of six sons. Two of them, Ed and Francis Bass, preceded the mother in death.

Mrs. Bass is survived by her husband; four sons, George, Charles, William and Gene Bass, all of Winterset; a sister, Mrs. E. D. Hartley of Winterset; and two brothers, Nelson Smith of Sac City and William Smith of Flagstaff, Ariz.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. J. Judge. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
