Philip Bales, Vinton

Funeral services for Philip Bales, 88, will be held August 6 at 9 a.m. at Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Earlham Cemetery. Mr. Bales died August 3 at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton.

Philip Bales was born September 7, 1902 to Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Bales in Linden, Iowa. On December 25, 1932, he married Helen Mary Williamson at her parents' home near Earlham. He worked as a meat cutter for many years in Earlham before moving to Vinton in 1988.

He is survived by one daughter, Charlotte (Mrs. Ron) Johnson, Vinton; three grandchildren, Billie Johnson Barker and Bart Johnson, both of Cedar Rapids, and Becky Johnson Smith, Robins; and five great-grandchildren, Joshua, Nick and Nate Smith as well as Ian and Collin Barker.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, and his parents.

The family will greet friends at the Vinton funeral home prior to the services. A memorial fund has been established.
