Services were held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church here this Tuesday morning, December 17, for Rev. John F. Hart, pastor of that church. Rev. Hart, 57, died at his home here last Saturday, December 14, 1974, of a heart attack.
Rev. Hart had been pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church here since July of 1972, when he was appointed to succeed Msgr. J. W. Higgins in the local post.
A Des Moines native, Rev. Hart was born July 8, 1917, the son of James F. and Anne Canavan Hart. He was a graduate of Dowling High School in Des Moines, Creighton University in Omaha, and Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis. Rev. Hart was ordained in 1943.
Following his ordination, Rev. Hart served as associate pastor at Portsmouth and Panama. He was chancellor of the Des Moines Diocese from 1948 to 1952.
Rev. Hart was appointed pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Irish Settlement in 1952, and served there until 1956, when he was appointed first pastor of Queen of Apostles Parish in Council Bluffs. He came to the Winterset parish from his Council Bluffs appointment.
Survivors include six brothers, James of Highland Park, Ill., Joseph and Bernard, both of Portland, Ore., Lawrence of San Francisco, Calif., Paul of Des Moines and Maurice of Emmetsburg.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Winterset, with burial in the Winterset Cemetery. Officiating at the funeral services was Bishop Maurice Dingman of the Des Moines Diocese.
A rosary was recited at the Beaverdale Funeral Chapel in Des Moines at 8:00 p.m. Monday evening.
