Ray Baker Sr., Winterset

Ray August BAker, 69, of Winterset died of a heart ailment Aug. 27, 2003, at his home.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Peru Cemetery with Pastor Darrell Sams officiating.

Ray Baker Sr. was born July 16, 1934, in Des Moines to Orie and Dona (Ralles) Schermerhorn. He later was adopted by Harry Pete Baker. On May 20, 1967, he married Barbara Pettit in Lincoln, Neb. Ray was resident of Madison County for most of his life, was a retired laborer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his adoptive father; a son, Gary Schermerhorn; twin infant sons; and a sister, Beulah Hatfield.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Baker of Winterset; two sons, Ray Baker, Jr. and Tony Baker, both of Winterset; two daughters, Tammy Baker of Winterset and Sheryll Eidesenshink of Iowa; three foster sons, Billy, Jessie and Elvis Gowin; two brothers, Burl Schermerhorn of Johnston and Jimmy Schermerhorn of Des Moines; two sisters, Dencil DeBok of Patterson and Maxine Gish of Des Moines; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
