Was Well-Known Jefferson Township Resident Many Years
Mrs. Mabel S. Baker, long-time resident of Jefferson township, died last Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Memorial hospital in Winterset. She was 78 years of age.
Mrs. Baker was the former Mabel Smith, daughter of Fred and Sophia Smith, and was born at Van Meter on Oct. 17, 1881. She was married to Rufus H. Baker on April 27, 1904. Their life together was spent on a farm in Jefferson township. Mr. Baker died in 1944.
She was a member of the Van Meter Methodist church.
Surviving are three sons, Rollin S. Baker and Marcy Baker of Winterset, and Dwight L. Baker of Des Moines; three daughters, Mrs. Vergene McKibben of Adel, Mrs. Lee Carter of Des Moines, and Mrs. Sam Walker of West Des Moines. She also leaves 11 grandchildren; one great grandchild; a brother, Calvin Smith of Van Meter; and a sister, Mrs. Sidney Cleveland of Van Meter.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Clifford Carter. Burial was made in the North McDonald cemetery.
