Lawrence Bailiff Sr., St. Charles

Lawrence "Larry" Bailiff Sr., 73 of St. Charles died of cancer Jan. 29, 2000, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

A funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday Feb. 2) at Assumption Parish in Churchville. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery of rural Churchville.

Larry Bailiff Sr. was born Feb. 26, 1926, to Peter Harlan and Lulu Ortmus (Patton) Bailiff of Corning. A graduate of Corning High School, he was an Army veteran of World War II, having served for two and one-half years. On April 17, 1949, he married J. Joan Bussanmas. Larry worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber in Des Moines, retiring after 33 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in St. Marys, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in Des Moines, American Legion in Cumming and the United Steel Workers of America.

He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Bailiff of St. Charles; a daughter, Stephanie Mason of Cameron, Ill.; two sons, Larry Bailiff Jr. of Polk City and Jim Bailiff of Des Moines; a sister, Frances Allen of Denison; eight grandchildren; and one step-daughter.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.
