Athol Bailey Dies at 71

Athol P. Bailey, who resided on a farm north of Winterset for the past 25 years, died in a Des Moines hospital on Wednesday, November 21. He was 71 years of age.

Mr. Bailey was born in Danville, Illinois, February 24, 1902, the son of George and Mary Bailey. On October 27, 1934, he was married to Viola Belle Meyers.

Mr. Bailey lived in Iowa for 60 years. He worked 17 years as a gardener at the Training School for Girls in Mitchellville, followed by eight years as a guard in the State Prison at Fort Madison and at the Burlington Ordnance Plant. After moving to a farm near Winterset, he farmed and also worked at the Woodward State Hospital, retiring from there three years ago.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one son, who died in infancy.

Mr. Bailey is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Dixie Periman of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Betty Osgood of Mitchellville; three brothers, Cloey Bailey of Adel and George and Wilbur Bailey, both of Los Angeles; four sisters, Mrs. Louise Divan of Oakwood, Ill., Mrs. Orpha Graham and Mrs. Ercel Liggett of Danville, Illinois, and Mrs. Lois Brokaw of Mitchellville. Three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one step-grandchild also survive.

Funeral services were held from the Trinity Lutheran Church at Van Meter Sunday afternoon, November 25th, at 2:30 with Rev. E. A. Breiholz officiating. Burial was in the Bondurant Cemetery.
