March 1941Maria Compton
Maria Pauline Petersen, daughter of Mathias and Batilda Petersen was born February 1st, 1876 in Dexter, Dallas County, Iowa, and departed this life March 11, 1941, at the home of her brother Fred, in Earlham, Iowa, at the age of 65 years, one month and 11 days.
She spent her entire life in and near Earlham. On December 24, 1897 she was united in wedlock to Frank C. Compton, who passed away January 23, 1939.
At the age of sixteen she was confirmed in the Lutheran Zion church at Dexter. She was a member of the Eastern Star chapter of Earlham.
Mamie as she was familiarly called has gone home. Her earthly race is run. She has completed the last page in her life’s history.
Such an active busy person as she was until stricken with paralysis three years ago. We cannot realize what a blow this would be to one so full of life and energy to be thus completely prostrated. But throughout her long illness she has shown a beautiful patience and fortitude, that has been a benediction to those who so lavishly gave her loving care.
It was the writer’s privilege to see her often, and never once did I enter her room and find her in a fretful, complaining mood, always cheerful and sunshiny, always interested in her old friends and neighbors. All of which proves to us that she was certainly sustained and upheld by some hidden spring of comfort.
She leaves to mourn her death, three brothers and one sister, Conrad of Chicago, Peter, Fred and Amanda of Earlham. Her husband, her parents, and a sister have preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at the Friends church Thursday at 2:00 o’clock. Rev. Waldo Reece was in charge of the services. Rev. Leonard Hall assisted. The Earlham Eastern Star chapter also took part in the services. Burial was made Friday morning, March 14 at the Earlham cemetery.

Wednesday, March 17, 1941MRS. MAMIE COMPTON DIES
Earlham--(Special)--March 17.--
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Friends church for Mrs. Mamie Compton who died at her home in Earlham Tuesday evening. Mrs. Compton had been confined to her bed for the past three years following a stroke. Her husband preceded her in death in 1939 and since that time she had made her home with her brother, Fred Peterson and their sister, Miss Amanda Peterson who came here from Chicago to assist in her care.
Rev. Reese of Des Moines, and a former pastor of the Earlham Friends church preached the funeral sermon and Rev. Hall assisted with the services. Musical numbers were furnished by a ladies quartette who were sisters in the Eastern Star chapter. The Eastern Star funeral services were also conducted by the Earlham Chapter at the church. As one brother of Mrs. Compton's from Chicago was unable to arrive until Friday morning the burial services was not held until Friday morning and short services were held at the Peterson home preceding the services at the cemetery.
Mrs. Compton is survived by three brothers and the one sister.
