Joe Alexander, Winterset

Joe Alexander, 77, of Winterset, died of Parkinson's Disease Feb. 27, 1996 at the Winterset Care center North. Funeral services were March 1 at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. The Rev. Don Frank officiated the services and burial was at the Winterset Cemetery with military graveside services.

He was born in Winterset on Aug. 11, 1918 to Erwin Joseph and Hennretta Louise (Schoen) Alexander. He married Darlene M. Harsh on July 6, 1971 in Omaha, Nebr. He was a retired truck and truck-part salesman, having been employed with Don Davidson Auto & Truck Sales. He had lived in Winterset the past 10 years. He had served in the Marine Corps during WW II and was a member of the Evening Star Lodge #43; V.F.W. Post 8142; American Legion Post #0184; a charter member of the Covered Bridge Good Sam's Camping Club, all in Winterset; and the St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; one brother-in-law; and two great-grandsons.

Surviving relatives include his wife; one son, Gary Alexander of Des Moines; two stepsons, Larry Gordon and wife Tomoe of Patterson, Calif., and Norman Gordon and wife Charlotte of Winterset; four step-daughters, Dixie Holt and husband Lynn of Winterset, Nancy Gunter and husband Larry of Kennesaw, Ga., Kathy Dix and husband Tom of Fairway, Kan., and Connie Vierling and husvband Kelley Reid of Seattle, Wash.; three sisters, Lenore Lineweaver and husband Louris of Winterset, Roberta Estell of Des Moines and Gertrude Oldham and husband Ellis of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
