A newspaper item records the passing into the unseen land of Jesse Aiken, who homesteaded in the Sioux valley a mile and a half northwest of Hawarden almost a half century ago, one of the earliest Dakota settlers, and who resided on the place he took from the government continuously to the day of his death.
As a bearding youth I lived several months with Mr. and Mr. Aiken, one of the most affectionate couples I have every knows. Mr. Aiken was the soul of hone and honesty, and sometimes he suffered a bit from trusting others, but these incidents never kept him from generous deeds. In the days I was in his home he always conducted family worship twice each day, but was not a regular attendant at church. He was active in territorial affairs. [author's name not printed.]
