IN MEMORIAM.

Jennie Fulton, daughter of the Rev. John Fulton, pastor of the Baptist church of this place, after a brief illness of one week, died May 19th.

Obituary notices are common, and sometimes the public is imposed upon by lengthy and unmerited encomiums upon the virtue of the dead. But in this case it would be unjust to the community to allow this event to pass unnoticed.

She was born Oct. 1st, 1853, in Cazenovia, Madison county, New York, came with her father’s family to Independence, Iowa, in 1859, and removed to Belvidere, Ill. In 1869, and from there here in 1876. Here but two years, and yet she made a record worthy of a veteran in Christian service.

The writer hereof first encountered her in the revival work of the church here in January, 1877, and was struck with her decision of character as a Christian. She was neither forward or obtrusive, but on all suitable occasions she was prompt both in prayer and speaking, as well as leading in the devotional singing exercises, and so added much to the interest and success of the meetings.

In sustaining the choir and the young peoples prayer meeting, she took an active interest. In a word, young as she was, she modestly but firmly took her stand in the first rank of those contending for “Peace on earth good will toward men.”

The writer was also struck with one other element of her Christian character. She trusted in Christ, and not in her work, and so trusting, did not make complaints of herself, as so many do, but spoke rather of the great love of Christ, and the ample provision He had made for fallen humanity.

The church mourns her loss deeply, and profoundly sympathize with her parents.

The large attendance upon her funeral testifies to the place she had won in the public estimation. Green be her grave, fragrant her memory.
