Services for James C. Adkins, 82, Dexter, who died of a stroke Wednesday, May 7, at the Earlham Care Center were held Saturday, May 10, at the United Methodist Church at Dexter and burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Adkins was born in Winterset. He was a retired owner and operator of Adkins Food Market. He had served on the Dexter City Council and school board, was past president of Dexter Commercial Club and was a member of the United Methodist Church and Mount Tabor Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Antoinette; two sons, James and Richard, both of Dexter; a sister, Rose McComb of Phoenix; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Earlham, IowaJames Casper Adkins, son of George and Effie Armbrest Adkins, was born July 27, 1903 in Winterset, Iowa and passed away May 7, 1986 at the Earlham Manor Care Center. Jim attended school at Winterset. On January 2, 1927 he was united in marriage to Antoinette Franklin. He came to Dexter in 1925 as manager of the United Food Market. Later, in 1935, he bought the business and continued operating the store for over 50 years until he was forced to retire in 1976 because of poor health.
He was a member of the Dexter United Methodist Church; President of the Official Church Board; President of Dexter Commercial Club; a fifty-year member of the Mount Tabor Masonic Lodge, and served on the Dexter City Council, the Dexter School Board and the Boy Scout Council.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Fred. Survivors include his wife Antoinette; two sons, James F. and Richard W., of Dexter; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Reverend Robert Farr officiated at the funeral service on May 10, 1986 at the United Methodist Church, Dexter, Iowa. Robert Lawson provided organ music. Pallbearers were Kurt Adkins, Michael Adkins, Christopher Adkins, Charles Vanderheiden, Wayne Fastle and David Fife. Interment was in Dexter Cemetery, Dexter, Iowa.
