Alvin Grant Scrivner, 89, of St. Charles, died Dec. 11, 2003, at Westview Care Center in Indianola. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 15, at the St. Charles Parish Church. Burial was at Close Cemetery, South Township, Madison County.
Alvin Scrivner was born June 7, 1914 to Robert Arthur and Mattie (Lehman) Scrivner of rural St. Charles. He attended school in Patterson for his first two years before moving with his family to a farm west of St. Charles. He then attended a rural school, graduating from St. Charles High School. He resided with his family for the next 10 years, helping with the farming. In 1942, Alvin was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the Aleutian Islands and Bougainville of the Solomon Islands and participating in the invasion of the Philippine Islands of Leyte and Cebu, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He also received a Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Service Arrowhead. On March 25, 1956, he was united in marriage to Mabel Viola McMurray in Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Ruth Smith; and two brothers, Guy Schrivner and Gene Scrivner. He also was preceded in death by two infant brothers and an infant sister.
He is survived by four brothers, Ivan Scrivner and Paul Scrivner, both of St. Charles, Charlie Scrivner and Springfield, Ill., and Joe Scrivner of Eagle Rock, Mo.; and three sisters, May Ewart of Pineville, Mo., Mary Peak of Knoxville and Lois Burt of Cedar Rapids.
