Obituary – Mrs. Nancy Baugh

Mrs. Nancy Baugh, a pioneer woman of Winterset, died died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lee Tidrick, on West Jefferson street at three o’clock Tuesday morning. Mrs. Baugh was 84 years old and had been in feeble health for many years. She was taken seriously ill two weeks ago and since then her physicians have held out no hope.

Mrs. Baugh came to Madison county with her husband, Mr. James, in 1858. After his death she married Dr. Rutledge who was for years one of Winterset’s best physicians. She was a devout member of the Methodist church and was always prominent in its affairs. Her home on “Gospel Ridge” near the cemetery has been a city landmark, and has always been known as one of the most hospitable in Winterset. She was married to John Baugh, a well known pioneer farmer of Webster township, about twenty years ago. Mr. Baugh has been dead for ten years.

Mrs. Baugh was a remarkable woman in many ways, and possessed a wonderful alertness and vigor of both mind and body for a woman of her age. She was known to all the older residents of the city and county and no person ever lived here who had more true friends. Two children, Mrs. Alice Rutledge Tidrick, and George Rutledge, both living in Winterset, survive her.

The funeral will occur today at the Tidrick home at 2:30.
