RALPH KIRKLAND, Winterset

Ralph G. “Bussy” Kirkland, 88, of Winterset died Oct. 7, 2005, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 10, at the Macksburg United Methodist Church with Pastor Sandra Smith officiating. Burial was at Moon Cemetery in rural Macksburg.

Ralph Kirkland was born April 3, 1917, to George and Myrtle (Edgington) Kirkland of Macksburg. On Nov. 5, 1938, he married Leona McDonald in Maryville, Mo. Ralph spent most of his working career as a farmer. He also drove a truck, was a heavy equipment operator and worked for the county. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Madison County Cattlemen’s Association, Madison County Pork Producers’ Association, and United Methodist Church (where he was founding member of the Methodist Church Men’s Club), I.O.O.F. Lodge and the Coffee Club, all of Macksburg. He also was mayor of Macksburg for more than eight years and served on the city council.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Harland, Worth, Floyd and Cleve; two sisters, Bernice and Grace; and a granddaughter, Brenda Kirkland Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Leona, of Winterset; three sons, Warren Kirkland of Winterset, Carl Kirkland of Lorimor and Ronald Kirkland of Macksburg; a sister, Dorothy Young of Winterset; and nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
