Death of Maria Ogden

Mrs. Maria Ogden, an old citizen of this place, died in Colfax the first of this week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. B. Wheelock. She had been an invalid for a number of years, and although a very active and robust woman until past middle age, she has been a great sufferer during this latter part of her life.

She leaves two daughters to survive her, Mrs. S. G. Ruby and Mrs. S. B. Wheelock. She removed to Colfax several months ago with her daughter, and for a time felt very much benefited by the change.

The remains were brought here Wednesday evening for interment beside her departed husband. The funeral will take place from the residence of S. B. Ruby on West Court Avenue Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Mr. Bennett officiating.

Maria Sanderson Ogden

Maria Sanderson was born in Sheffield, England, July 31, 1817, where she grew to womanhood. In 1839 she was united in marriage to Mr. William Ogden, of Hyde, England, and during that same year they came to America and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. The removed to Winterset in 1856 where they lived happily together until the death of Mr. Ogden which occurred a number of years ago.

For the past six or eight years Mrs. Ogden’s health has been in a precarious condition, and during which time she has suffered greatly, but through it all she remained the cherry “grandma” that characterized her through life. She was an ardent and active member of the Christian church, and long after her health forbade it she allowed nothing to interfere with her regular attendance on the church services.

After a useful and beautiful life that will ever leave a glow of sunshine behind it, she goes to her reward. She died at the home of her grandson, M. B. Wheelock, in Colfax, Iowa, at the ripe age of eighty-seven years, on Monday Oct. 19th, and was brought to Winterset and buried Friday, Oct. 23rd.
