A former grade school teacher in rural Madison County and North Ward school in Winterset, Martha Boyce Thomas, 80, died Monday, December 20, 1976, at Madison County Memorial Hospital. She was a resident of Madison Manor North Nursing Home.
Born July 11, 1896, in Winterset, Mrs. Thomas was the daughter of Marcus Boyce and Grace Smith Boyce. She married Floyd J. Thomas on May 25, 1935, in Indianola. He preceded her in death in 1969. A graduate of Winterset High School and Kansas University, Mrs. Thomas was a resident of Winterset since 1962. She had lived on a farm in Webster township. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Wesley Chapel Church for 27 years, also affiliated with the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset and was a member of the Madison County Farm Bureau Women.
Survivors include two step-sons, Jack Thomas of Winterset and Wayne Thomas of Murray, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Ethel) Jenson of Washington, Ill. and a step-daughter, Mrs. Don (Helen) Palmer of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three brothers, Dan Boyce of Winterset, Earnest Boyce of Ann Arbor, Mich., Hugh Boyce of Lawrence, Kansas; three sisters, Ruth Stringham of Lawrence, Kansas, Bertha Jenks of Palo Alto, Calif., Alma Brunnell of Cedar Falls, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, Joseph Boyce.
Funeral services for Martha Boyce Thomas were conducted Thursday, December 23, at 10:00 a.m. from Collins Funeral Home, Rev. Alan Parker officiating. Burial was made at the Winterset Cemetery.
