Rebecca "Betty" Madeline Paton, 83, of Des Moines, died of a heart ailment May 21, 2004, at the Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset with the Rev. Jim Howland officiating. The body has been donated to the University of Iowa Medical Hospital.

Betty Paton was born April 23, 1921, in Winterset to Herman and Beulah (Light) Cox. She was a 1939 graduate of Winterset High School. On Oct. 16, 1941, she married Richard W. Paton in Winterset. Prior to her retirement, Betty had been a secretary for the former Public Health Nursing Association in Des Moines. A resident of Des Moines since 1948, she was a member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church and Eastern Star. She also was the Mother Advisor for the Order of Rainbow.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Arleta Bruns; and a brother, George W. Cox.

She is survived by two daughters, Gwen Paton of Des Moines and Jeanne K. Roberts of Phoenicia, N.Y.; a sister, Iva Frederick of Montezuma; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
