Obituary

Willis E. Clague was born near Berwick, Illinois, on September 25, 1884, and departed this life at his home in Winterset, Iowa, July 4, 1962. He was the fourth son of Thomas and Mary Ray Clague. Willis’s father was a native of the Isle of Man and brought the unusual family name to this area when they moved from Warren County, Illinois, to Madison County, Iowa, in 1892. Willis carried, with honor, this “Manx” name, and have his sisters, brothers and wife with him.

On June 7, 1911, he was united in marriage to Bernice Knox and established their home on a farm in the Worthington community. To this union was born two children: Elsie, Mrs. Clare Sawyers, of Winterset; and Earl of rural Ames, Iowa.

From early manhood until his last illness, he was active in the work of the church. When he moved from the farm, he transferred his membership to Winterset church and took active interest in the remodeling and addition of the educational wing.

During the past year, he was seldom able to leave his home. The loving care of his devoted family and continued loyalty of his brothers and sisters and the numerous thoughtful acts of friends did much to sustain him through the trying months.

He leaves besides his wife and children, four grandchildren: Marilyn and Martin Clague of Ames, Mrs. David (Margaret Ann) Mallgren of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Marvin Clague of East Palo Alto, California, and two great grandchildren, Deborah and Randall, children of Marvin and Joan Clague.

Surviving are five brothers and sisters: Edgar Clague of Winterset, Mrs. Nettie Stanley, Earlham, Ralph Clague and Mrs. Mable Hamilton of Winterset and Glen Clague of Earlham. Preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers.

Interment was in Winterset cemetery.
