Page 7John Thomas Gaunt was born in Indiana May 24, 1834, and died at his home near Winterset, Iowa, Oct. 3d, 1909, aged seventy-five years, four months and ten days.
When about twenty-five years of age he moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was a patriotic and liberty loving man, which he proved by enlisting in the 33d Iowa Infantry and served in the defense of his country through the civil war.
He was united in marriage to Miss Margaret R. Tate December 25, 1866. To them were born two children, Mrs. Hedbloom, of Nebraska, and one who died in infancy. Mrs. Gaunt died Jan. 22, 1872.
December 25, 1874, he was married to Miss Permelia Tate. To this union one child was born, Mrs. Walter Jones.
In September 1896, Mrs. Gaunt departed this life.
His two daughters, Mrs. Hedbloom and Mrs. Jones were with him in his last illness, and did all that medical aid and loving hands could do for him.
Funeral services were conducted at the home October 5th, by Rev. J. E. Clearwater, in the presence of relatives, comrades and a great number of friends. A procession fully one-half mile long followed the remains to the Hooten cemetery where the body was laid to rest, with the beautiful and impressive ceremony of the Pitzer Post.
