LELAND HINDMAN, Van Meter

Leland Marion Hindman, 85, of Van Meter died Feb. 28, 2006, at Mercy Capital Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 3, at the Earlham Church of Christ with Pastor Steve Allison officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Leland Hindman was born Oct. 23, 1920, to Harvey and Myrtle (Hodgson) Hindman of rural Malcom and attended country school in Malcom and Laurel. From 1948 until 1949, he worked at Maytag in Newton. On Feb. 27, 1950, he married Irma Beckett in Des Moines. Leland was a farmer for most of his life. He and his wife also were members of the Worthington Methodist Church for over 20 years and have been members of the Earlham Church of Christ for 28 years.

He was preceded in death by one son, Marvin Hindman; two brothers, Albert and Raymond Hindman; and two sisters, Lorena Dolmage and Arlene Cutler.

He is survived by his wife, Irma, of Van Meter; one son, DeWayne Hindman of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Carolyn Taft of Van Meter and Barbara Dawn of Waukee; a brother, Harvey Hindman of Winterset; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.

Funeral services were held for Leland Marion Hindman on Friday, March 3, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Earlham, Iowa. Pastor Steve Allison officiated and Linda Smith was the pianist.

Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art”, “In the Garden”, and “Amazing Grace”.

Pallbearers were Truman Payne, Gary Herrick, Tom Hagen, John Ridgely, Gary Patience, Mike Penrod, Eric Ruckdashel and Andrew Webber. Honorary pallbearers were Neal Hanley, Eldon Beckett, Bob Reynolds, Charles Taft, Sr., Chuck Taft and Paul Down.

Leland M. Hindman was born the son of Harvey and Myrtle Hodgson Hindman at the family farm near Malcom, Iowa. He died at Mercy Capitol Hospital in Des Moines on February 28, 2006 at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 5 days.

Leland attended country school in Malcom and Laurel, Iowa. Leland worked from 1948 until 1949 at Maytag in Newton, Iowa. Leland and Irma Beckett were married on February 27, 1950 in Des Moines, Iowa. This union was blessed with 4 children: DeWayne, Marvin, Carolyn, and Barbara. Leland and Irma attended Worthington Methodist Church for over 20 years and have been members of the Earlham Church of Christ for 28 years. Leland was a farmer most of his life. He enjoyed bowling, and church activities, however especially enjoyed spending time with family.

Leland leaves the following family to celebrate his life: wife Irma Hindman of Van Meter; son DeWayne Hindman and wife Diana of Cedar Rapids; daughter Carolyn Taft and husband Chuck of Van Meter; daughter Barbara Dawn and husband Paul of Waukee; brother Harvey Hindman of Winterset; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Leland was preceded in death by his parents, his son Marvin Hindman, brothers Albert and Raymond Hindman and sisters Lorena Dolmage and Arlene Cutler.

Interment was held in the Winterset Cemetery in Winterset, Iowa. Kuhn Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.
