JAMES M. McCOLLUM DIES

James M. McCollum, long-time resident of Madison county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bertha Sommers in Des Moines on Sunday evening, October 9th, after an extended illness. He was seventy – eight years of age, and for the past four years had lived here with his daughter, Mrs. L. E. Mason. He became ill this summer and was taken to the home of another daughter, Mrs. Sommers.

Mr. McCollum was the son of Thomas and Jane McCollum, and was born near Bakersville, Ohio, February 9, 1860. He came to Iowa with his parents, at the age of eight years, and they settled on a farm near St. Charles. Mr. McCollum continued to live in that vicinity until in 1934 when because of ill health he made his home with his daughter.

On February 13, 1890 he was married to Laura C. Hoffmere, and to this union five children were born; two sons and three daughters. The sons preceded him in death, one dying in infancy, and the other, Earl, in 1935. He leaves his three daughters, Bertha Sommers and Leota Woods of Des Moines, and Ilo Mason of Winterset; two sisters, Mrs. S. L. Burke of Los Angeles, Cal, Mrs. Minerva Hall of Scranton, Iowa, and three brothers, McLlain and Lafayette McCollum of Lucas and Leonard of Scranton. He also leaves four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Lucius L. Smith, pastor of the St. Charles Methodist church conducted his services at the church Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock and burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
