CARL BROWN Of Wintersest DiesCarl Brown, a life-long resident of Madison county and a well known citizen of Winterset for many years, died last Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1960, at Memorial hospital here, after an extended period of failing health. He was 75 years of age.
Mr. Brown was a pioneer in the motor freight industry in Iowa. He had operated the Brown Line out of Winterset since he was granted a franchise in 1924.
He was born near Patterson on Oct. 23, 1884, the only child of Robert and Nell Brown. At the age of 18 years he was a teacher in the rural schools of Madison county.
Mr. Brown was married in 1907 to Anna Martin of St. Charles. They were parents of three children, a son and daughter dying in infancy, and Mrs. Mary McNamara of Winterset, whose death occurred in 1943.
He served actively in the affairs of his community for many years. He was a past president of the Winterset Rotary club, and at his death left his eyes to the Lions Club Eye bank, with the hope that "some little child will be able to see through my eyes."
He was an ardent hunter and fisherman, and in later years took up golf, which he played with one arm, after losing the other in a truck wreck. In 1950, he received the Sportsmanship award at Lakeview Country club, where he was a member.
He leaves his wife; two grandsons, Pat and Nick McNamara of Winterset; and a great grandaughter.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the Richards Funeral home. conducted by the Rev. W. A. Samp of Tingley. Burial was made in the Winerset cemetery.
