PETER J. TIERNAN DIED LAST FRIDAY

Funeral Held Monday At St. Patrick's Church in Lee Township

Peter J. Tiernan, member of a prominent family in the Irish settlement northeast of Winterset, died Friday, June 19 at a nursing home in Davenport, after nearly two years of failing health.

Mr. Tiernan suffered a stroke in August 1951, and had been an invalid since that time. He was 71 years of age.

He was born of pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Tiernan in Madison county on Feb. 16, 1882, and spent his life in this county. He farmed extensively in Lee and Crawford townships and took an active part in the affairs of his church and his community.

Mr. Tiernan never married, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He leaves 15 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday from St. Patrick's Catholic church in Lee township. The Rev. J. J. Judge, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic church at Winterset said the Mass, and the Rev. D. P. Curtain, pastor of Assumption Catholic church at Churchville, gave the sermon. Burial was made in St. Patrick's cemetery.
