Obituary of Mrs. Sylvania Gatchel

Sylvania Evans was born in Madison county, Iowa, May 21st, 1853. She was united in marriage to H. S. Gatchel on Nov. 3rd, 1872. Her parents were prominent members of the Predestinarian Baptist church, and she was raised in that faith, but in the year 1894 she with her husband united with the First Christian church in this city, where she continued in good standing, filling all the vows of her membership till the time when she was unable to attend the services of the church. She was a great sufferer, and in it all she did not complain, was hopeful till the last that she would recover, and remain with her family. During her illness, everything that kind hands could do, was done for her.

She departed this life at 11:45, Saturday night, June 17th, 1905. She leaves her husband, six children, (two children having preceded her to the better land,) five brothers, three sisters and a host of friends to mourn their loss. As a mother in the home, she was intensely interested in all its affairs, was a good counsellor and her children honored and loved her. In the language of the proverbs: "The heart of her husband could safely trust in her."

The funeral services were held at the Christian church in Winterset, conducted by her pastor, E. E. Bennett, after which the remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the Worthington cemetery.
