Was Well-Known Citizen Here During Last 31 Years Of Life
Clarence W. Sweeney, retired Winterset businessman, died last Friday, Feb. 5, at a Des Moines hospital. He had undergone surgery for a circulatory condition a few days previously. He was 66 years of age.
Mr. Sweeney had lived at Winterset for the last 31 years, and was one of the most active and widely-known citizens of this community. He came to Winterset in 1934 to open the Sweeney Auto company and Sweeney Implement company. He continued in those firms until his retirement in 1956.
Mr. Sweeney was born at Booneville, in Dallas county on Oct. 13, 1898, a son of William T. and Myrtle M. Haskroder Sweeney. His early life was spent in farming. He was a veteran of World War I, and active in the American Legion here.
Mr. Sweeney was married in 1923 at Nevada, Ia. to Audie Mason who survives him.
He was a member of the Booneville Methodist church, and the Masonic lodge at Winterset.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Zink of Des Moines; a granddaughter, Linda Zink, who was reared in his home; a brother, Ralph Sweeney of Mundelein, Ill; and an aunt, Mrs. Bertha Franklin of Adel.
Funeral services were held Monday from the First Methodist church of Winterset, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. John C. Porath, and the Rev. William E. Bowles, pastor of the First Christian church of Winterset. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery, with military honors at the grave-side.
