Viola Briney, Winterset

Viola Briney, 68, of Winterset died of cancer May 16, 2003, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 20, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset with Pastor Sandra Smith officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Viola Briney was born Nov. 30, 1934, in Madison County to Howard and Jessie (Read) Young. She graduated from Macksburg High School in 1953 as valedictorian. On Aug. 21, 1955, she married Rodger Briney in Creston. Viola spent most of her life as a homemaker and farm wife, assisting her husband in the management and operation of the family farm. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Macksburg, Garden Club and Hobby Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Rodger of Winterset; two sons, Randy Briney and Craig Briney, both of Winterset; one daughter, Sherri Briney of St. Charles; eight brothers, Jim Young of Atlantic, Gayle Young of Greenfield, Raymond Young of Orlando, Fla., Duane Young of Creston, Charles Young of Lenox and Larry Young, Robert Young and John Young, all of Winterset; one sister, Connie Dahl of Orient; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the United Methodist Church of Macksburg.
