Jack Breen Dies at 59

Funeral services for John M. (Jack) Breen, a former Winterset resident, will be held this Thursday, March 15 at 9:30 a.m. from St. Joseph's Catholic Church here.

Mr. Breen died Monday, March 12 in Des Moines.

A son of Michael and Margaret Johnson Breen, he was born at Winterset on May 4, 1919. He attended Winterset schools, graduating from high school in 1937.

Mr. Breen was a highly decorated Marine corps combat veteran of World War II, serving in a number of South Pacific campaigns, including Saipan, Tinian, Tarawan and Iwo Jima.

Following the war he farmed north of Winterset for a number of years.

Mr. Breen was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Katherine and Florence.

Surviving are four daughters, Margaret of Des Moines, Mary of Seattle, Washington, Patricia of Omaha and Nancy, a freshman student at the University of Iowa; three sons, Mike of Denison, Jim of Houston, Texas and Daniel of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Mae) Beeler of Winterset and two brothers, Raymond Michael Breen of Houston, Texas and Robert Breen of Des Moines.

Officiating at the funeral this Thursday morning will be Fr. Gene Cunningham. Burial will be in the Winterset Cemetery. A rosary service will be held this Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. from the Collins Funeral Home.
