Page 1WALTER BRANDT DIES IN AUTOMOBILE CRASH
St. Charles Farmer Instantly Killed As Car Hurtles Into Ravine.
Walter Brandt, 31 years old, of near St. Charles, was instantly killed at about 9 p.m. Friday, when the car he was driving catapulted from Highway No. 2 into a deep ravine on the Forts Trading Post hill near Patterson.
Brandt was returning to his home from Winterset when the accident occurred. He was driving alone, and the reason for the mishap is not know, but two theories have been advanced. One is that he was coming down the hill too fast to make the turn, and when he applied his brakes the wheels locked and threw the car out of control. It has also been suggested that a hold-up was attempted. This theory gained credence when it was found that ghouls had stripped the car of battery, light bulbs, and other valuable parts after the accident. The victim was known as a good automobile driver.
The accident was discovered by Frank Wiedman shortly after it happened. Brandt was dead when found, his neck having been broken.
He is survived by his wife, who was the former Laura Smith, and two small children, Donald, 3 years old, and Nadine, 6 months. He also leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brandt, a brother, Ray, and a sister Katherine.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Monday, from the Ramsy-Richards funeral home. The Rev. A. R. Weed, of the West Star church, was in charge. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. The pall bearers were brothers-in-law and two close friends: Glen and Frank Smith, Frank Clampitt, Glen Shoemaker, Albert Crandall, and Wayne Wright.
The music was furnished by a quartet of St. Charles friends; Mrs. H. V. Brooks, Mrs. Frank Crawford, Mac Buchanan and E. R. Beitzel. Mrs. Guy Armstrong served as accompanist.
A number of people from St. Charles, and many of the friends of Jackson township were here for the services. The ones from out of the county were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Wright of Grimes, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hulick and son Floyd and daughter Vera of Berwick, Illinois, and J. A. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Pashong of Des Moines.
