Harriet A. Woods of Winterset, a teacher in Iowa schools and colleges for 58 years, died Saturday, May 27, at Memorial hospital here. She was 83 years of age.
Miss Woods had spent her long active life in teaching. She served the Winterset schools for 16 years and over her long career had taught at Woodbine, Clarinda, Estherville and Sioux City. Her later years were spent teaching at the college level. Since her retirement, she had been making her home in Winterset.
Miss Woods was born in Union township Sept. 25, 1888, a daughter of George W. and Martha Ann Whitt Woods.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian church. At college she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma society. She was a member of the state and national Education associations, holding a life membership in the former. For 55 years she was a member of Crown Rebekah lodge here. She was affiliated with the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Madison county Democratic Women and the Retired Teachers association.
Miss Woods is survived by a brother, Austin Woods, and a sister, Mrs. Edith M. Ryner, both of Winterset. A brother Nelson Woods and two infant brothers preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held this Tuesday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. D. C. Davis of Clarinda. Burial was made in the Jefferson cemetery in Jefferson township.
