Myra Spencer, Winterset

Myra Koboldt Spencer, 91, died March 3, 2004, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston. A former Earlham resident, she resided at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset for a number of years.

A memorial service was held Monday, March 8, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastor Linda Burnett officiating. Interment of the cremains will take place at a later date at Jackson Cemetery in Madison County.

Myra Spencer was born April 11, 1912, to Harry and Martha (Allen) Koboldt of rural Rippy. She attended normal school and briefly taught country school. On May 25, 1938, she married Howard Spencer at Early Chapel Church. She had been very active with the Cub Scouts in the 1940s and 50s. During the Vietnam War, Myra became an activist for the POW/MIA cause when her son was captured and held as a prisoner of war for seven years. She was invited to the White House by President Richard M. Nixon in recognition of her efforts.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Earl Koboldt.

She is survived by two sons, Larry Spencer of rural Waukee and Lee Spencer of Urbandale; three sisters, Mae Martens and Amy Leggett, both of Winterset, and Nina Davis of Oskaloosa; and a brother, Wayne Koboldt of Earlham.
