There died in this city on last Saturday evening, a woman of most lovable character and one who had spent her entire life in this vicinity -- Mrs. L. C. Houk.
Mrs. Houk, whose maiden name was Sarah Gamble McLees, was born in this county fifty-one years ago. Twenty nine years ago she was united in marriage to Lester C. Houk. They had one child, Mary, who passed away four years ago this month.
Mrs. Houk's illness began about three months ago. She was taken to the hospital in Des Moines, where every effort known to medical science was employed in an effort to save her life, but the fight was unsuccessful and at her request, she was brought home two weeks before her death.
Funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Rev. T. V. Dugan, of the United Presbyterian church, were held on Monday afternoon and burial in the Winterset cemetery.
She leaves a husband, three brothers, William and Anderson McLees of North Dakota, and John of this county, also two sisters, Mrs. T. B. Hunter of Winterset and Mrs. Michael Gamble of Crawford township.
