Lela Nielsen Sweikert, 80, of Winterset died of cancer Aug. 28, 2002, at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
Burial of the cremains was at Fontanelle Cemetery, where a private family graveside service was held.
Lela Sweikert was born in Fontanelle and had lived most of her adult life in Winterset. She was retired from Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines where she had been employed as a phlebotomist. Lela also worked at Montross Pharmacy in Winterset for many years.
She is survived by three sons, Loel Hunt of Spirit Lake, John Hunt of Chino Hills, Calif., and Tim D. Hunt of Altoona; two daughters, Rama Jean Harris of Redding, Calif., and Gayle McDaniel of Des Moines; companion, Claude Lecocq of Winterset; two sisters, Marjorie Wade of Chesterfield, Mo., and Zelpha Turner of Columbia, Mo.; a brother, Larry Nielsen of West Palm Beach, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Dunn’s Funeral Home in Des Moines.

Lela May Sweikert, 80, of Winterset died of cancer Aug. 28, 2002, at the 56th Street Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines.
Burial of the cremains was at Fontanelle Cemetery, where a private family graveside service was held. A memorial graveside service for family and friends will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Fontanelle Cemetery. Following the service, a celebration of life will be held at the V.F.W. Hall in Winterset for family and friends.
Lela Sweikert was born Feb. 10, 1922, to Herman and Florence Nielsen of Peru. She had lived most of her life in Iowa. Lela had worked throughout the 1980s at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, where she had been employed as a phlebotomist. She also had been a cook at Montross Pharmacy in Winterset until retiring in the late 1990s.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and two brothers.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Claude LeCocq of Winterset; three sons, Loel Hunt (wife Clarian) of Spirit Lake, John Hunt (wife Aileen) of Chino Hills, Calif., and Tim Hunt (wife Kathy) of Des Moines; two daughters, Rama Jean Harris (husband David) of Redding, Calif., and Gayle McDaniel (husband Kenny) of Des Moines; two sisters, Marjorie Wade of St. Louis, Mo., and Zelpha Turner of Columbia, Mo.; a brother, Larry Nielsen of West Palm Beach, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Animal Rescue League.
